Most of us focus on the outcomes almost exclusively. We, by nature, make the results a default goal. We think the results are the things that needed to change, when in fact, the process behind the results is what requires development and change.
In other words, we would say, let’s make the process the default action, whilst only checking on the goal occasionally to see if we’re moving in the right direction, because the key to sustainable achievements are the habits that proceed those goals and you can continue to keep moving forward, towards the desired outcome, rather than keep looking back to where you started.
Achieving goals only change our lives for the moment, it is not an ultimate solution we all are looking for. For example, if your revenue does not meet expectations and you set a goal for your team to increase the revenue by 3 % in the next 60 days, you perhaps could get your team motivated and achieve that 3% increase in 60 days…for one month. But, if you do not change the selling habits or ways of working that led to a less effective sales process in the first place, soon enough your revenue will again not meet expectations. So, in reality you do not need higher revenue, what you need is better and more effective selling habits of your team, or more effective sales etiquette from your team members, and then you will see that your revenue will meet expectations and, in many cases, exceed them.
Similarly, doing one push up a day does not transform your body overnight, but it does set the tone to greater fitness focus for which can be developed, similarly, to meditate for one minute does not give you an immediate sense of calm, but it does cast a vote for being a meditator.
Once you create good habits that lead you toward your goal regularly, you soon begin to adopt that identity in many aspects of your life, both professionally and personally, and then before you realise it, you are not pursuing behavioral change anymore, it becomes who you are.
